Kalevi Montela 5.45.50 Olavi Montela 5.57.13 Sää: 0 C, heikko etelätuuli, pouta. Keli: Hyvin auratut pyörätiet, paikoin kiiltävän liukkaat Juoksu: Kevyen helposti nauttien. Kalevi starttasi klo 15.13 ja Olavi lähti matkaan klo 17.00. Kalevi juoksi ensin yksin 16 km:n lenkin aikaan 1.35, ja piti sitten kotonaan 11 minuutin tauon. Kohtasimme klo 17.02. Juoksimme yhdessä 18 km aikaan 2.05. Pidimme Kalevin kotona n. 6 minuutin juomatauon. Olavi ja Kalevi Orivesi ------------------------------------ Paul J. Vecchio, age 37 yrs. from Tallahassee, FL, time = 4:38:31. The route I ran was the Munson Hill Trail in the Apalachicola National Forest just outside of Tallahassee, Florida. The surface was a mixture of sand, long leaf pine needles, and a generous helping of toe jamming / face planting roots courtesy of the numerous oak, tupelo, hickory, ash, maple, and beech trees found throughout the forest. The course was a 7.5 mile convoluted loop through gently rolling hills in the northeastern corner of the National Forest. The terrain is a karst plain, a term used to describe land where rain and groundwater have dissolved underlying limestone bedrock; creating caverns and underground streams. This phenomenon created numerous natural sinkholes, swales, and circular depressions that were visible from the trail. Other highlights of the run included encounters with local wildlife, which included deer, red tailed hawk, opossum, and Sherman fox squirrels on race day. I ran solo and used self-support for four 7.5 mile loops plus a 1 mile dog-leg at mile 30 to complete the 50K distance. My truck parked near the trail served as an aid station for water refills and a place to shed gear as the temperatures got warmer. I started out early and used a headlamp on my first lap. Temperatures at the start (around 6:00 EST) were in the high 30s to low 40s in the early morning with fog and rose to the mid 50s and clear by finish time. Aside from the wildlife and terrain, the most memorable aspect of the race was that the local Forest Rangers conducted a controlled burn on one small section of the forest adjacent to the trail a week earlier. On race day, there were still some tree stumps on fire across a wide fire-break, providing an eerie glow in the darkness and fog before the sun came up. I enjoyed this run very much, felt pretty good during most of it, and had a rapid recovery. Although not a PR, it was definitely a great experience and quite different from the terrain in the Yours Truly 2000 I ran in western Washington State last year. Thanks again for putting on this unique event. Happy Trails. ------------------------------------ Moikka! Maria Tähkävuori ------------------------------------ Andras Low, 34, Budapest, Hungarian 4:24:45 125 loops on a standard athletic track mostly sunny, mild weather, with 8 - 11 C (I ran in shorts). Hello Tero, For some time past while we met last time on a race. I have ran 125 loops last Sunday on our local athletic track and I would like to join to the Yours Truly 50K race with this effort. Thanks Andras ------------------------------------ Completed the 2001 Yours Truly 50km on Jan. 28: Robert Lebrun, age 57, from Callander, Ontario, Canada Time 4hr 53' 5" Ran on 2x12.5 km loops; the paved surface was a mix of wet, snow covered and slush. Weather was very pleasant, about -8C, light wind and mostly sunny This was my first 50km run entirely alone; scheduled to pass by my house on every loop for support. Turned out to be a very enjoyable event. Thank you for organising this event. Robert Lebrun ------------------------------------ Here are the results and race report from the 2001 Waterloo Edition of the Yours Truly. 28 January 2001 Waterloo, ONT CANADA 9.00am Start Course - 2 loops 19.2k, 1 loop 11.6k RESULTS 1. Jennifer Dick, 25, F, Waterloo 4.52.24 Ryne Melcher, 21y364d, M, Waterloo 4.52.24 (2 starters) A unusually large group set out for the 2001 Yours Truly from the Kitchener YMCA. This was the first year to my knowledge that the usual 20 mile/12 mile route had not been taken. The reason for the short field was that a small group opted to run Saturday. Despite the times being identical it was a back and forth race the entire way. Jenn blasted from the start and spanked me like a rented mule for the first 16 miles. Nonetheless I stayed focused and on my game plan. A boost drink strategically placed out in the middle of nowhere at 18 miles gave me the energy needed to comeback and takeover the lead at the 24 mile mark. Any dreams I had of winning that day were shattered when shortly thereafter cramps set in and lifting my legs off the ground was a challenge and with a half mile to go Jenn caught back up and the sprint was on to the finish. I think she edged me by a hair but we agreed upon a tie. We actually did run the race together but the above seemed like a more interesting story. Jenn PB'd by 33 minutes running her fastest 50k since her very first ultra 9 months ago in Chicago (5.25.56). She also agreed to crew me for the February 25th wave of the event so I could make a half decent effort to try to defend from last year. Weather was rather cold to start (-5 celcius) with a windchill factor of about -12. However by the 26 mile mark Jenn was doing a strip show at Ron Gehl's house (our only aid station) but to Ron's dismay she stopped at the jacket, gloves and touque. Special thanks to Barbara Gehl for the water, coke and banana at 26 miles to give Jenn the energy she needed to finally crack the 5 hour mark (and PB). ------------------------------------ This is a report of 50k finishers from the "FROZEN FLAG FIFTY" held in Balmy Beach, Ontario, Canada(just north of Owen Sound)on Jan 28th. The same 10km circuit was used as in previous years...a 5k loop, then 2.5k out & back over a flat paved route. Only thing was we never saw much asphalt on the snow covered roads and precipitation coming down with air temperature around minus 6, but no wind. There were 28 runners doing various distances but 9 actually managed to slip & slide through less than perfect traction to finish 50km. Mark Bomhower of Elmira had the fastest time of the day with the only sub 4 hour performance in 3:57:15. Organizer Doug Barber of Owen Sound lost "a few minutes" socializing inside the race headquarters house(Cliff & Sheila Renfrew) after 25k, but after a couple of soda pops & some timbits decided to continue on and eventually finish. A mishap just before the start didn't seem to kindle the Renfrews spirit. A van hit there dog crossing the road but it escaped injury. Several runners brought there favorite flag to mark the start/finish area, and a non perishable item for the local Food Bank . And a few even remembered to save a few Guiness from Saturday nights carbo load & hot tub party (I'm not mentioning any names Howie!)to celebrate after. It was the first year for t-shirts for this the 5th annual event and becoming more popular, with out of town entries almost outnumbering the local runners from the "Fat Boys" running club. We started at 9:00 am, Sunday, 28 Jan 2001. The course was flat road, snow covered surface on a 5.2 k loop. The first 25 k was in heavy snow fall with light wind which than change to warm sunny sky. Despite the weather, 3 runners made the start. We are planning to host the event on the 25 Feb also. ------------------------------------ Armand Leblanc President Borden Striders Running Club Borden. Once again, the Yours Truly was blessed with excellent weather conditions for the Pacific Northwest. The run saw temperatures in the high 20's to low 30's F (the valleys were typically cooler) and mostly sunny which contributed to great views of Mt. Raineer and the Cascade Mountain Range. Interesting Aspects: Once again, the run was blessed with good weather, good views, and good friends. Gene Tahern ------------------------------------ Yours Truly 50K at Lake Youngs, Renton & Kent Washington (first annual of this version) - January 28th, 2001. The course is an urban trail encircling Lake Youngs - apparently a large watershed or protected habitat of some sort. The entire Lake is surrounded by a chain link fence. 2,500 feet elevation gain over the 50K, the 9.5 mile loop has many inclines and rolling hills which are very deceptive, (the race director advertised this as a "flat" course). The 50K runners ran a 2.6 mile out-and-back before starting the three 9.5 mile loops. Five runners from the North West Dead Runners Society braved sub-freezing temperatures at 7:00 AM PST, to join an improvised version of the Yours Truly 50K. A sixth runner showed up late but quickly caught the group after one loop and added his out-and-back at the end. In addition to the 50K, there were nine others, (some from NoW DRS and some from a local running club), who would join us for one or two-plus loops, bringing the total to 15 runners. The trail, which is used by many runners, walkers, mountain bikers, and horse riders, was frozen most of the morning making it a bit faster than normal. As it happened, a dark horse decided to change from 21.6 miles (two loops, plus the out-and back), to the 50K. David Hays, who has never gone beyond the marathon distance, ventured into new territory to take on the 50K, mid-stream, and finished with an outstanding time. (This is the first time I recall the number of finishers of an ultra being greater than the number of starters, as all, plus one, finished the 50K). The day was spectacular with cold, but dry, running conditions. All who ran enjoyed their runs and the "no whiners" rule was not broken. 50K Results: Mika LaVaque-Manty 4:06:22 (also a Finlander Tero) David Hays 4:26 Glenn Tachiyama 4:30 Tony Covarrubias 4:30 Bill Cusworth 4:40 Cheri Gillis 5:55 Doug Beyerlein 5:55 ------------------------------------ Tony Covarrubias (unofficial race director) I took part in Yours Truly yesterday (Sunday) over a 50km trail course at Dedham, Essex. My finishing time was 5:00:22. I set off at 09:05 GMT with the temperature 0.5C. Thanks to an overnight frost, the ground was firm underfoot and for the first few miles the going was easy. The sky was blue and the sun was shining - definitely a day for getting out of town and into the country. However, my route soon took me downhill towards the river Stour. At the top of the hill I saw a huge lake ahead of me that shouldn't have been there. The river had burst its banks and flooded the adjoining fields. With no where else to go, except forward, I had to wade through the flood water, mostly knee deep, but sometimes waist deep. On the outskirts of Dedham, the water was so deep that I had to take a diversion in order to get onto the other bank. I figured that the extra few hundred meters would be faster - and a lot safer -than attempting to stay on the flooded side of the river. The meadows were also flooded on the other side of Dedham, but not so badly and, in fact, I passed several people strolling through the fields in Wellington boots, exercising their dogs. The remainder of the run was uneventful and by the time I finished, at 14:05 GMT, the temperature had risen to 7.5C. Sää talven kylmimpien kuukausien viimeisten viikonloppujen tapaan nollasta plus kahteen. Räntää tavalliseen tahtiin. Perjantaista alkaen vapaasti kertynyt lumi ja sohjo oli jauhautunut asialliseksi pöpperöksi koiran ulkoiluttajien jaloissa. Vauhti juostessa sen mukaan. Ei onneksi ollenkaan liukasta. Puoli kymmeneltä matkaan edellisten vuosien reitillä ja huollolla. Ensimmäisen 14 km lenkin jälkeen laskeskelin mahdollista loppuaikaa ja kiristin seuraavat kierrokset aina 2 min edellistä nopeammin. Huoltotauot lyhenivät kerta kerralta. Loppuaika 4.27.29. Ennakkoon aioin kylläkin ottaa huomattavasti leppoisemmin, mutta tuntui hyvältä juosta näin. On pian kymmenen vuoden kokemus reitistä mäkineen. Joululta taas aloittelin lenkkeilyn. Hyvä syy jatkaa tällainen yhteinen osallistuminen. Thanks for coordinating this!!!!!! With bright sunshine and moderate temperatures the conditions for this year's YT 50K were a drastic change from the 2000 version. Last year only two runners completed the 2 lap, 25K course while all others opted for various snow-free adaptations. The Malcolm-Knapp UBC Research Forest is a 5,157 hectare slice of forest containing just about every type of terrain found in the lower coastal region of British Columbia. The northern end forms the foothills of the Golden Ears Range while the southern end consists of gentler slopes of glacial till. The forest is dotted with six main lakes and literally hundreds of ponds and streams. It is hemmed to the east by the flat peatlands of Pitt Lake and to the west by the dominant peaks of Blanchard, Edge and the Golden Ears. The course is on gravel forest roads and takes the runners on a tour of the entire area. This year's record turn-out of runners dribbled into the parking lot between 8-9 am, picked up a map, and grouped up for the non-traditional start (go when you're ready!). In true ultra trailrunning tradition everyone enjoyed the fine weather, mountain views, and the company of their friends on the trail. 50K Forest roads 1205m Climb 1. Rob Lang 44 4:16:00 2.
